| "Max" getting his horns on |
In one of these conversations with Mom she mentioned the fact that there was a spring well in the floor of the pantry of the old farmhouse. I know I'm infamous for having a worthless memory but I swear that's something I never knew. So I would love to know more about that and ideally would love to see a picture, though I'm sure that's asking too much.
I have decided that if I'm still here through the spring thaw, I'm going to try to determine, if possible, where the oft-mentioned cemetery was out back and maybe whether there was a home there as well. So any information that anyone has in that regard (I will talk to my luddite uncle) would be very much appreciated.
Stepping into frozen water yesterday in the "pond" out back reminds me that I took my kids skating out there when they were little, and my siblings and I used to skate back there. Are we the only ones who found that or other places to skate? On one of our walks, Todd and I followed the snowmobile trail until it came out "in the field" on the "flat." Well, it's no longer a field, having completely grown up. Does anyone have a story related to something they did there when it was still a field?
Once again, I would just love to get the ball rolling using this as a way to share the family folklore so we don't lose it. I would think the younger generations would have many questions, which would also spark information that us older folks forgot or didn't know. So if you have any questions at all, just put them here in the comments. If you need any help using this, send me an email. Even better yet, if you have a story to tell (it doesn't have to be long or witty or well written) or any information that you'd like to share, I encourage you to do that. One idea that's pretty simple is to title something "Things I remember" and then just list those things in bullet form, though I suspect you'll find yourself telling a story about those things before you're done.

Just a little something I have been working on - probably as close to poetry as I will get. I will try to put something up more often.
THE LAND
We walk into the woods, the dog and I, the first ones on the new-fallen snow. We do see a few rodent and deer tracks, no human. We see chickadees, such friendly interesting little birds. So beautiful and quiet and I think of the people who came before and kept this land in the family.
Spring comes and everything is awakening. The wildflowers are a such joy, especially the Ladies Slippers. Again I think of the ancestors, clearing the land plowing, planting, building
Summer the woods ‘slow down’. We see the occasional deer, hawk and smaller birds. Make note of the changes with fallen trees and branches.
Fall is such a wonderful time to walk in the woods with the fallen leaves. Now the huge rocks can be seen, weighing many tons and I think of the work in clearing the land. No wonder we are so ornery and stubborn.
Mama Joan
Joan, that is wonderful.
Zeb, ask your Uncle Jim about the cemetary. You won't get him on the computer.
MamaJoan, what a great post! I hope others post some great stories... I love hearing stories from the past!
The cemetary is just beyond the snow mobile trail just inside the woods (the one that leads to the flat) on left hand side. I think that Dad, Jim and Gramp cleared out all the head stones they could find years ago. The stones are in the barn I think but I'm not sure.
Dad has mentioned several times wanting to get a metal detector to go explore in that area. I've gone a looked around and there isn't anything there to see, but I think with a metal detector you may find some interesting things. There has to be, at the least, nails in that area.
Happy hunting!!!!
I have a metal detector if anyone wants to use it lol
Kim, why don't you come up here with it and we could go around the property with it. That would be awesome in many ways.
